Overview

HR manager cover letters face a particular challenge: you are writing a professional document for people who read professional documents all day. The hiring team knows every cliche in the book. "People person," "keen about employee engagement," and "strategic HR professional" will not get you noticed. What will get you noticed is a clear record of employee relations case management, project delivery, and measurable improvements.

This cover letter is from Natalie Whitmore, applying for an HR Manager role at Asda's Leeds head office. She has nine years of HR experience and currently serves as the sole HR manager at Arla Foods' Leeds site, covering 420 employees. Let us examine what she does well.

Opening with scope and population

Natalie opens with her total experience (nine years), her current employer and role (sole HR manager at Arla Foods Leeds), and the population she covers (420 employees across production, logistics, and office teams). She then explains why Asda appeals: scale, mix of retail and corporate populations, and the transformation work under new ownership.

This is effective because it tells the reader two things immediately. First, she is used to being the single point of contact for a large workforce. Second, she understands what makes Asda's HR challenges different from what she does now. That level of awareness is what distinguishes a good application from a generic one.

For your HR manager cover letter, start with your scope. How many employees do you support? How many sites? What functions or business areas do you cover? These numbers define your level.

The ER caseload shows capability under pressure

The ER statistics are striking: 38 disciplinaries, 14 grievances, and 2 ET claims in the past year, with zero findings against the company. That last part is the key detail. Managing high volumes of ER cases is one thing. Doing it with a clean tribunal record is another.

HR managers are often judged by their ER track record. If you have handled employment tribunal claims, ACAS conciliations, or complex disciplinary cases and achieved positive outcomes, include the numbers. They are the strongest evidence of your professional competence.

The TUPE project is the standout achievement

Leading a TUPE transfer of 65 warehouse staff, running the full consultation process, harmonising terms across 3 shift patterns within 6 months, and achieving a 94% retention rate at the 12-month mark with zero tribunal claims. This is a complete project from start to finish with a measurable outcome at every stage.

TUPE transfers are among the most complex HR projects you can run. They involve legal compliance, employee consultation, terms harmonisation, and retention management. Showing that you have done one successfully, and with specific retention data, is a powerful signal.

For your letter, if you have led or contributed to any significant HR project (restructuring, TUPE, policy overhaul, HRIS implementation), describe it in terms of scope, process, and outcome.

Absence reduction with a financial impact

Cutting site absence from 6.8% to 4.1% through an early intervention programme and manager training, saving an estimated £180,000 annually in agency cover. This connects an HR initiative directly to a financial outcome, which is exactly what senior stakeholders want to see.

If you have improved absence rates, reduced turnover, or delivered any initiative with a quantifiable cost saving, put the number in your letter. HR is increasingly expected to demonstrate ROI on its programmes, and having concrete figures strengthens your case significantly.

Qualifications and professional development

CIPD Level 7 Advanced Diploma, ACAS Certified Mediator, and trained Mental Health First Aider. For an HR manager role, the CIPD Level 7 is the expected standard. The mediation and mental health qualifications show breadth beyond the core HR skillset.

Template choice

This letter uses the Slate template, which is polished and professional. For HR roles at large corporate employers, your letter should reflect the same standard of professionalism you would expect from the documents your team produces. Slate delivers that.
