Overview
Illustration is a field where your portfolio does most of the talking, but a strong resume opens the door to agencies and in-house roles where a portfolio alone is not enough. Studios and design agencies want to see that you can work to briefs, meet deadlines, and produce commercial-quality work at scale. Freelance commissions, published pieces, and industry awards all carry weight.
This resume belongs to Ellie Walsh, an Illustration graduate from the University of Brighton. She completed a placement at Design Bridge & Partners and built a freelance practice with 20+ commissions. Her resume works because it shows both creative range and commercial discipline, backed by specific output numbers.
What Makes This Resume Work
Agency work demonstrates commercial capability. Creating 50+ illustration assets for FMCG packaging projects, including work for a Unilever brand, proves Ellie can produce at the volume and quality level that agencies demand. Preparing final artwork for print production shows she understands the technical side of the job.
Freelance revenue and client satisfaction are quantified. Earning £4,800 across 18 months with a 100% satisfaction rate signals that Ellie manages client relationships professionally. Published editorial work in named magazines adds further credibility.
The AOI shortlisting provides industry validation. Being shortlisted from 600+ entries for a recognised illustration award tells a hiring manager that Ellie's work has been evaluated by practising professionals and stands out in a competitive field.
Key Takeaways
If you are applying for illustration roles, treat your freelance work and personal projects as seriously as any employment. Count your commissions, your published pieces, and your revenue. When describing agency or studio placements, count the assets produced and name the clients. Illustration hiring managers want to see that you can deliver consistently and work to commercial briefs.
