Junior Automotive Engineer Resume Example

Overview

The UK automotive industry is undergoing a significant transformation with electrification and ADAS technologies, and employers need graduates who combine traditional vehicle engineering knowledge with modern testing and data analysis skills. Placement experience at an OEM or Tier 1 supplier is the clearest signal that you are ready for a graduate engineering role.

This resume belongs to Oliver Khan, an automotive engineering graduate from Coventry University who completed a 12-month placement at Jaguar Land Rover. He worked on three vehicle programmes, processed over 500 test data files, and operated data acquisition equipment on 40 track test sessions. His Formula Student leadership experience and practical mechanic's assistant role add further depth.

What Makes This Resume Work

OEM placement experience on real vehicle programmes. Working on three production vehicle development programmes at JLR gives Oliver credibility that no amount of coursework can match. Employers know that a graduate who has worked within an OEM development process understands the pace, standards, and collaboration required.

Data analysis volume demonstrates capability. Processing 500 data files using MATLAB and DIAdem shows Oliver can handle the volume of data that vehicle development generates. Testing roles produce enormous datasets, and being able to extract meaningful insights from them is a core skill.

Formula Student leadership shows initiative. Leading the suspension design team and contributing to a competitive finish demonstrates engineering leadership, project management, and hands-on design skills. Automotive employers actively look for Formula Student experience on graduate applications.

Key Takeaways

Junior automotive engineers should emphasise OEM or Tier 1 placement experience with specific vehicle programme counts, test session numbers, and data volumes processed. Include the tools you used (CATIA, MATLAB, DIAdem) and describe what you did with them rather than just listing names. Formula Student involvement should be highlighted with your specific role and any measurable outcomes. A clean driving licence is essential and should not be forgotten.
