Junior Economic Analyst Resume Example

Overview

Economic analyst roles in the public and private sector typically ask for strong quantitative skills, familiarity with statistical software, and the ability to communicate complex findings to non-technical audiences. For graduates, the challenge is proving you can do all three when your experience is limited to university coursework and perhaps one internship.

Priya Sharma is an economics graduate from the University of Edinburgh who completed a 6-month internship at the Scottish Government. Her resume works because it connects academic training directly to professional output, showing that she has already used Stata and Excel to produce work that informed real policy decisions.

What Makes This Resume Work

Government experience with tangible outputs. Priya does not just say she "assisted with research." She specifies that she contributed to 3 ministerial briefings and built a tracking model covering 14 industry sectors. These details show that her work had a real audience and a real purpose.

Technical skills demonstrated through use, not just listed. Anyone can write "Stata" on a resume. Priya backs it up by describing a regression analysis on 5 years of labour market data. The recruiter can see exactly how she used the tool and at what scale.

An independent project that shows initiative. The Scottish housing market analysis was not a university assignment. It was a self-directed project using real data from Registers of Scotland. This tells employers that Priya is curious and self-motivated, not just completing what is required.

Key Takeaways

For junior economic analyst roles, your resume needs to show two things: that you can work with data at scale, and that you can turn numbers into insights that someone else can act on. Name the software you used, the size of the datasets, and the audience for your work. If you lack formal work experience, an independent research project using publicly available data is an excellent way to demonstrate the same skills.
