Junior Tax Adviser Resume Example

Overview

Tax advisory is a field where precision matters above almost everything else. A misclassified expense or a missed deadline can result in penalties for your client, so firms hiring junior tax advisers are looking for candidates who demonstrate accuracy, attention to process, and a genuine understanding of UK tax rules.

Adebayo Okonkwo is an accounting graduate from Leeds Beckett University who completed a placement at Garbutt + Elliott, an independent accountancy firm in Leeds. His resume is effective because it shows hands-on tax work with real clients, real values, and real HMRC interactions.

What Makes This Resume Work

Client-facing tax work with specific numbers. Preparing 35 self-assessment returns and handling income ranges from £20,000 to £450,000 shows Adebayo has worked across a variety of client types. This is far more convincing than simply writing "assisted with tax compliance."

HMRC experience that shows real responsibility. Responding to 3 HMRC enquiry letters and resolving them within 4 weeks is notable for a placement student. It shows the firm trusted him with sensitive client matters, and he delivered.

A self-initiated project that demonstrates sector knowledge. The freelancer tax guide was not required by his course. Creating it and distributing it through the careers service shows initiative, practical tax knowledge, and the ability to communicate complex rules in plain language.

Cash handling experience that proves accuracy. Zero discrepancies over 18 months of daily cash reconciliation at Costa is a strong data point. Tax firms care about people who do not make mistakes with numbers.

Key Takeaways

For junior tax adviser roles, describe every type of tax work you have done, the values involved, and the number of clients or returns you handled. If you have used specific software like TaxCalc or Xero, name it. If you have dealt with HMRC directly, say so. These practical details are what separate your application from someone who only studied tax in a lecture hall.
